Women's League Competitions

Page created: 2 August 2022

Updated: 1 March 2026

NOTE This is an ongoing project and has not been updated to include the most recent few seasons

The Scottish Women's FA was founded in 1972 by six clubs; Aberdeen, Edinburgh Dynamos, Westthorn United, Motherwell AEI, Dundee Strikers and Stewarton Thistle. The SWFA organised the league competitions and in 1972-73, Westthorn United won the first Championship. After one season of West and East Region Leagues in 1975-76, a second division was competed for from1976 to 1981. It was re-established in 1986 and a third division was added in 1991. Between 1996 and 1999 these were replaced by regionalised sections.

The Scottish Women's League was formed by the SWFA on 9 November 1999 and this took over the running of the existing leagues, the top division being renamed the Premier. In 2002, the Premier Division broke away to form the Scottish Women's Premier League and in 2016 the SWPL formed a second division, pushing the SWL's divisions down one tier. In 2022 the SWF created two national divisions (Championship and League 1) that sit at tier 3 and 4 of the Pyramid.

From 2020, the SWF assumed responsibility for the SWL's first division, re-titling it as Championship, with its member clubs needing to meet certain criteria to compete. The remaining Division 2 sections of the SWL was designated as a Recreational league with no promotion.

From 2009 to 2020 the season was played during the calendar year until the winter season was reintroduced, although the SWL's second divisions continue as summer competitions.

From 2023-24, the SWF divisions were integrated into the Pyramid.

The Highlands and Islands Women's League was founded in 2019 by Scottish Women's Football (SWF) and also sits at the fifth tier and like the 'national' sections. also has no direct promotion to the SWL.
