The reorganization of
the Scottish League into Premier-First-Second Divisions in 1975 saw a
restructured reserve set-up. The Premier Division clubs were place into a new
Premier Reserve League, which mirrored the Premier Division membership, while
the lower league clubs used varying set-ups such as East-West sections and
midweek competitions. Note that the last season of the Combined Reserve League, which was re-formed in 1973, is also
featured on this page, the other seasons of this league are featured on the
Part 3 of the Reserve League pages. Because of the costs of running a reserve
side, these latter competitions didn't feature every club, and saw a wide
variation in their memberships.
In 1983-84 the Reserve
League (West) and (East) were both played as a mid-week competitions with some
Premier Division sides also entering their 2nd XIs.
After the formation of
the Scottish Premier League in 1998, an Under-21 league, with some overage
players, replaced the Premier Reserve League, but this lasted only until 2004
when it reverted to a wholly reserve competition. The Reserve League (East) was
abandoned after 2004 simply because of a lack of entries and while the West
section continued its size diminished until in 2006-07 there were only four
clubs competing. In 2007, the Scottish League decided to scrap the Reserve
League completely and to replace it with Under-age leagues although it returned
in 2012. Since then various formats have been used; Under-age and Development
leagues before the reintroduction of the Reserve League in 2018.
In 1976 the absence of
a reserve league for east coast clubs from the lower leagues prompted the
formation of the Central Reserve League.
Running for just one season, it was an unusual competition in that games were
advertised but they were 'unofficial' in the sense that clubs organised and
paid for their own referee and linesmen. J McConville, Dunfermline Athletic
Secretary, acted as League Secretary and results etc had to be supplied to the
Dunfermline Athletic office. Scheduled from September until the end of March,
the bad winter caused many postponements, and the league was wound up
unfinished. The only other comparable tournament from recent times was the Tayside Reserve League which operated in
the late 1970s and early 1980s.
