Formed on 25 March 1891 by twelve clubs, this
league had a brief two seasons of existence.
Dykebar
didn't respond to an invitation to join but Hurlford accepted. After the first
season, Hurlford and Kilmarnock Athletic joined the Ayrshire League while Burnbank and
Glasgow Wanderers left to concentrate on cup-ties and friendlies. Neilston and
East Stirlingshire, who transferred from the Scottish Alliance, were elected to make the numbers up to ten. The
Scottish League's decision to form a Second Division in 1893 indirectly caused
the Federation to close down. The Scottish Alliance, as the senior non-League
body, was used as the backbone for the new section with Motherwell also gaining
admission. Four Federation clubs then transferred to the Alliance. With Falkirk
and East Stirlingshire entering the Midland
League, and Hurlford and Kilmarnock Athletic joining the Ayrshire League
the Federation closed down.
The name was revived
for a season as a reserve competition in 1898-99. Formed through the efforts of
Partick Thistle, the Scottish Federation was formed
after a meeting at Meadowside Park in Glasgow in July 1898 and designed to give
regular matches to the reserve teams of Partick Thistle,
Clyde, Linthouse and St Mirren. It was also to
feature the first XIs of Beith, Cameronians,
Cartvale, Cameronians, Dykehead, East Lanarkshire, Kilbarchan
and Neilston. The three Dunbartonshire clubs, Dumbarton, Renton and Vale of
Leven, were also invited but declined to join and Beith,
Cartvale and East Lanarkshire subsequently dropped
out before the season started. The competition was wound up after one season.
