Scottish Combination

including the Scottish Reserve League (1895-96 version)

Mr Wilton, secretary of the Rangers, contacted Queen's Park in December 1895, asking whether the club would be agreeable to support the proposal to form a Glasgow Reserve Eleven League. Queen's were willing, and resolved to attend any meeting called for the purpose. The Scottish Reserve League was formed 13 December 1895, and consisted of five clubs; Queen's Park, Rangers, Celtic, Heart of Midlothian and Leith Athletic. On the 7 July1896, the body was reconstituted as the Scottish Combination.

The founder members of the first Scottish Combination were Heart of Midlothian 'A', Queen's Park Strollers and Rangers 'A' (both ex-Scottish Reserve League), East Stirlingshire, Falkirk and Stenhousemuir (all ex-Midland League), Hamilton Academical, Royal Albert and Wishaw Thistle (all ex-Scottish Alliance), and Celtic 'A'. Reserve sides won the first four championships but none after 1900 when it was clubs entering their first teams that triumphed. The second season saw the departure of Hamilton Academical when they were elected to replace Renton after they resigned after four games in the Scottish League. Also East Stirlingshire, Falkirk and Stenhousemuir all helped form the Central Combination. The other absentee was Celtic 'A'. Interestingly, this was the only season that the Glasgow club's reserve side would enter a non-League competition. The formation of the Scottish Union in 1906 hit the Combination hard with the loss of five clubs. One of the replacements, Johnstone, tied with Galston for the title, but a play-off wasn't arranged and so the Championship was shared. From here on the league diminished in status while its centre of gravity shifted south-west. In 1909 it appeared that the league would fold, but after some perseverance seven clubs were mustered and what was to be its last full season, Nithsdale Wanderers and Girvan shared the title. One last season was attempted but, although some games were played, the competition wasn't completed and the league subsequently folded.

The second version of the Scottish Combination was formed after a series of meetings in Glasgow. On 9 July 1935, the first meeting was by the unsuccessful applicants for the Scottish Alliance to form a new league competition; Third Lanark 'A', Ayr United 'A', Clyde 'A', Falkirk 'A', Alloa Athletic 'A', Edinburgh City 'A', Bo'ness and Stranraer

The second meeting on 22 July saw Ayr United 'A', Third Lanark 'A', Edinburgh City 'A', Rosyth Dockyard Recreation, Bo'ness, Nithsdale Wanderers and Stranraer all being accepted as members. AA Jackson of Ayr was appointed President, J Murray of Stranraer as Vice President, and T Jennings of Third Lanark as Secretary. The management committee was made up of T Sloan (Third Lanark), D Bannatyne (Edinburgh City), A Laird (Bo'ness), KJ Campbell (Rosyth Dockyard Recreation) and D Nivision (Nithsdale Wanderers).

A subsequent meeting in Glasgow on 29 July saw the admittance of four more clubs - Queen's Park Victoria XI, Girvan, Dalbeattie Star and Vale Ocoba. These clubs would also have representatives on the Management Committee.

Third Lanark 'A' left for the Scottish Alliance in 1936, as did Ayr United 'A' in 1937 when their first teams were promoted to the Scottish League First Division. After this the league simply disbanded.
