The success in raising funds for charitable
purposes in the West of Scotland of the matches played in Glasgow for the
Merchants Charity Cup since the 1876-77 season led to the Edinburgh Football Association
approaching Lord Rosebery, a well-known and influential
sporting patron, in the hope that a similar competition could be organised for the
East of Scotland. Organised as an end of season competition, the Cup was played
for every season, including during war time, from 1882-83 to 1944-45 inclusive,
a total of 63 competitions. Heart of Midlothian recorded the most number of wins
with 32, Hibernian coming next with 22. Leith Athletic and St Bernard's both recorded
4 wins with Mossend Swifts winning on the only occasion
the trophy went outside the capital city. Many of the ties, especially in the early
years of the competition, were played on neutral grounds. Even before the outbreak
of World War 2 though, the appeal of end of season charity matches had dwindled,
although ironically enough the largest crowd recorded for a tie in the competition
was the 15,252 who attended the last ever game at Easter Road on 9 May 1945, between
Hibernian and Heart of Midlothian, although the size of the crowd might just have
been influenced by the euphoria surrounding Germany's unconditional surrender just
two days earlier.
