Formed in November 1894, all the principal clubs were approached, but in the end only three clubs showed an interest. The first games were played towards the end of the season but some matches had to be held over until the start of the following season.

A second attempt at forming a Renfrewshire League in November 1903, which would also include Abercorn, never came to fruition and in October 1915, Johnstone, Abercorn and Arthurlie attempted to get a league going to fill the mid-winter dates. Paisley Academical were also asked if they would consider joining, but in the end, the league never materialised.

The Renfrewshire Combination was formed at Globe Hotel in Paisley in late June 1896 by the county's minor Senior clubs and lasted for one season.
