The Loftus Cup came into existence in November 1911 following a proposal from the Dundee Hibernian secretary Pat Reilly. Born in Ireland, Reilly came to Dundee as a child and at 18 opened a cycle shop which was followed by others in Perth, Leith and Edinburgh. The connection with Edinburgh persuaded him that a football club for Irishmen in Dundee could be successful and he helped found Dundee Hibernian in 1909. The trophy was donated by Dundee baker David Wallace who lived at Loftus House in Broughty Ferry. The Loftus Tea Rooms were located at the bottom of the gardens adjacent to the house. David Wallace though is best known for his 'Wallace Peh' the legendary Dundee Scotch Pie. Later on, there was a family rift and the Wallace business split into two, 'Wallace Land of Cakes' and 'The Auld Dundee Pie Shop'.

As the organising committee wasn't in favour of it being named after him, the title of his residence (Loftus House) was used instead.

Only three clubs were involved in the inaugural competition but in 1912-13 they were joined by Cowdenbeath and East Stirlingshire.

 

Although the last competition under this name was held in 1920-21, it continued sporadically as the Wallace Cup during the rest of the 1920s.

 

There was also a Loftus Cup played for by the Dundee junior clubs.
