The Eastern Alliance was formed on 6 May
1891 by six predominantly Linlithgowshire clubs; Mossend Swifts, Armadale, Bathgate Rovers, Bo'ness,
Broxburn and Leith Hibernian. Broxburn Shamrock and Kirkcaldy were later
admitted but Leith Hibernian, a club related to the original Hibernian club,
actually disbanded before the competition started and were replaced by
Adventurers. Kirkcaldy dropped out late in the season and their results
expunged. Due to four of the clubs not completing their fixtures, the
competition was declared null and void and the league disbanded in the close seaason. The championship trophy was presented to the league by Mrs
McLean of the Masons' Arms of Bathgate.
On 6 Jan 1894 at the
East of Scotland FA Rooms, George VI Bridge in Edinburgh, six West Lothian
clubs set up an East of Scotland League,
this was the first of several leagues that have been called by this name.
At the meeting the
following were elected as officials:
Hon. President - Col Wanshope of Niddry
President - Mr Latimer
(Bathgate)
Vice President - Mr
Johnston (Bonnyrigg Rose)
Treasurer - Mr Hislop
(Penicuik Athletic)
Secretary - Mr Miller
(Bonnyrigg Rose)
Entry was set at £1
with a match guarantee of £3 and the home side meeting all expenses.
Although at the
meeting it was agreed to enter no more clubs this season, Broxburn Shamrock was
allowed to join later. The competition didn't fare well and was unfinished
primarily because it had started so late in the season.
In 1895 a Linlithgowshire League was organised but lasted only
one season with many fixtures unfulfilled.
