An earlier attempt at a county league was taken
in 1893 when on 4 July six Scottish
Federation members from Lanarkshire met at the Brandon Hotel in Motherwell;
Carfin Shamrock, Wishaw Thistle, Hamilton Academical,
Albion Rovers, Royal Albert and Motherwell. The next day, Motherwell intimated
that they would need to withdraw if their application to join the Scottish
League was successful. The opinion was that the league couldn't be viable
without them and with Motherwell being elected to the Scottish League on 10
July 1893, the Lanarkshire League concept was abandoned.
The Lanarkshire
League was formed on 1 October 1898 at the Brandon Restaurant in Motherwell
with Mr Griffiths of Motherwell as President. With the exception of Carfin Emmet, the clubs were also members of either the Scottish League or Scottish Combination.
