This page is based on research by Malcolm Pagan and published in his book 'A History of Junior Football in Dumfries-shire' (SNLR, October 2008). This book also contains all the cup results as well as an extensive club directory. Copies of this book are very rare but can become available via online sources.

 

Junior football in Dumfries-shire was administered by a number of Associations that existed a various times.

 

The Wyper Medals was a one-off cup competition played in 1881-82, for junior and reserve sides from Dumfrieshire and Kirkcudbrightshire.

 

The Dumfries Junior FA was formed in 1887 and ran the Recreation Grounds Cup before disbanding in 1889.

 

A new association, the Dumfries, Maxwelltown & District JFA was formed in 1892 and instituted the Dumfries, Maxwelltown & District Junior Cup. A Dumfries Junior League was also organised in 1899-1900 but the fixtures were not completed and the competition was abandoned. In 1900 another competition, the Queen of the South Junior Challenge Shield was also introduced. The JFA disbanded in 1907. The Senior club Dumfries FC also sponsored a short-lived Junior competition between 1904 and 1906.

 

A more longer-lasting Junior Association was the Annandale JFA. Formed in Annan 1898 this more or less existed until 1930 when it reformed as a Juvenile association. As well as the Annandale Junior Cup, it also ran the the Kinnimount Cup, the Longmuir Cup and the Annandale Junior League.

 

The Upper Nithsdale Charity Cup, which was competed for between 1907 and 1909 was previously a Senior competiton.

 

In 1911 another body was formed, the Dumfries & Maxwelltown Junior FA likewise operated Cup and Shield competitions but would disband in 1912.

 

After the Great War, October 1919 saw another attempt at forming a Junior Association in the shape of the Dumfries & Galloway Junior FA. Eighteen clubs in total joined, Annan Comrades, Annan YMCA, Burns Select, Castle Douglas Athletic Creetown Juniors, Dalbeattie Trades, Dalry, Gatehouse Comrades, Hoddam Rangers, Kello Rovers, Loreburn United, Maxwelltown United, Nithsdale, Rosefield, St Andrew's, St Cuthbert's Juniors, Solway Star Juniors and Tayleurians. Once again the Cup and Shield were put up for competition. The latter was played as the Dumfries & Galloway Junior League in 1925-26.

 

After World War Two the last attempt at creating a lasting Junior association was made with the formation of the Dumfries and District Amateur Junior FA in 1947. As well as a league the JFA also sanctioned two cup competitions, the British Legion Cup and the Johnstone-Currie Cup. A one-off League Cup was also played for in 1949-50, one year before the Association disbanded, this time for good. Kello Rovers remained as the region's sole Junior until they turned Senior in 2020.

 

In the Stewartry counties of Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire the term 'Junior' generally referred to the 'A' sides of Senior clubs, eg Douglas Athletic were the reserve side of Douglas Wanderers. Therefore the Junior competitions in this region were a mixture of the two grades.
