The Ayrshire
League was formed by ten clubs in 1891 and two years later the Ayrshire
Combination was founded by six of its member clubs.
Kilmarnock left for the Scottish League in 1895 and they were joined by
Ayr in 1897. At its AGM in June 1897 the Combination was wound up and its
member clubs concentrated on the North Ayrshire Cup.

1896-97 Ayrshire Combination
Saltcoats Victoria resigned after playing one match, an
8-2 defeat to Galston on 15 August 1896. Rule 6 stated
that all clubs could claim the points so all the clubs could be awarded 4
points each but whether this occurred is open to question. Ayr awarded 2
points from Beith after the latter fielded an
ineligible player Both Beith v Galston matches were
not played each being awarded 2 points Monkcastle v Beith not played, Monkcastle being awarded 2 points 7 Nov Stevenston v Monkcastle 3-1 stopped
after 80, Ayr v Hurlford 5-0 after 75 mins, both due to poor light. Ayr were
awarded those 2 points, and the championship, when Hurlford failed to replay
them on 11 May when ordered. 26 Dec Irvine v Stevenston
1-0 stopped after 30mins due to a storm Ayr v Beith played at Beith The aggregate score for the Irvine v Hurlford
matches was 2-9 |
