The Texaco Cup was a cross-border tournament, its official name was the International League Board Competition, but thanks to the sponsor, was re-titled the Texaco Cup. Entrants were restricted to those clubs that had just missed out on gaining a place in one of the three European club competitions. Sixteen clubs six each from Scotland and England and four from Ireland entered the first series, but by 1972 the Irish sides were dropped due to the political unrest at the time. The last season saw the English part of the draw increase to sixteen clubs drawn into four qualifying sections.

 

Each entrant was to receive cash sums depending on the round reached -

First round 1000-1500GBP

Second round 2000GBP

Finalists 2500GBP

Winners 3500GBP

 

By 1975, Texaco had decided to withdraw their sponsorship but the Management Committees of the English and Scottish Leagues decided that the tournament continued as the Anglo-Scottish Cup. The same format was used, that is only clubs not qualifying for European competitions could be entered as well as the highest scoring clubs from the lower divisions. Again as with the Texaco Cup, the English sides dominated, winning all bar one of the competitions. St Mirren were the only Scottish success, but in 1981, the Scottish League decided to withdraw from the tournament as it was felt that the bigger English sides were snubbing it.
